Development
The transfer of know-how and skills to our staff are integral thrusts of our strategic direction and daily operations. We are also cognizant of the need to catalyze industry’s growth by creating capabilities and opportunities within the industry’s support industries. The design and construction of our offshore gas platform Jerneh in 1992 was among our initial key contributions - it was the first all-Malaysian effort in the nation’s oil and gas industry, and remains one of our proudest achievements. Today, all our offshore development projects are fully made in Malaysia from start to finish. We play an active role in the Vendor Development Program (VDP), an incentive sponsored by Malaysia's Ministry of Finance. The VDP aims to produce formidable homespun suppliers and entrepreneurs in keeping with Malaysia’s Vision 2020: developed status by the year 2020. Through the VDP, local vendors have developed capabilities in the areas of maintenance, manufacturing and fabrication, and have increasingly received the bulk of our contracts for design, fabrication, installation and construction. Production Offshore: ExxonMobil’s predecessor Standard Oil began prospecting for oil in this region as far back as the early 1900s, culminating with the incorporation of our exploration arm Esso Exploration Malaysia Inc. in 1965. Today we have working interest in 6 Production Sharing Contracts with PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national oil and gas corporation. We operate over 40 offshore platforms in 17 fields in the South China Sea, off the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, These facilities produce 160,000 barrels of oil and condensate, and 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. Onshore: We are the main tenant of the Kemaman Supply Base, a comprehensive logistic supply facility that supplies us with marine vessels, berthing facilities and other logistical efficiencies, all of which provide our offshore operations with critical onshore support.
